Individual Responsibilities
As individual citizens we must vigilantly preserve our Second Amendment right to defend ourselves and our families. I support generous concealed carry laws and believe citizens have a right and responsibility to be the first defense for themselves and their family.
State and National Responsibilities
History shows the absolute necessity of always being prepared. With looming nuclear and terrorist threats from various places around the world, we must maintain a strong military and even stronger diplomacy at the national level. At the state level our police must be able and ready to respond to the realities of our troubled world.
We must also resist the pull of a one-size-fits-all authoritarian model, and the temptation to incorporate international law into our American judicial system. America’s greatness is built upon a strong foundation of unique principles of government, including reliance on the citizen for the first line of defense, that must never be compromised. We must focus our state’s offense against terrorism in intelligent, effective ways that do not victimize our own people.
Defending Our Borders
Defending our borders has many aspects, including controlling illegal immigration. Citizens across Colorado understand the valuable contribution of legal immigration and they know the difference between legal and illegal. At both the state and federal level we must find solutions that will put us back on the healthy track of legal, manageable immigration. The great challenge in this issue is not just the symptom of illegal immigration, but also the root cause of a poorly created and managed system of legal immigration. Let’s re-establish the vision of an America where those who come for opportunity are encouraged to do so in a way that harmonizes with our nation’s best interests – a win-win approach that encourages others to aspire to the American Dream but does not encourage or reward illegal behavior.
